The earliest recorded priests to serve in Whitby were young Frenchmen who sought refuge in England during the Revolution: Jean Francois Richenot 1794-99, Jean Pierre Gabriel Goudouin 1799-1803 and Alain Nicholas Gilbert 1803-1815. Whitby was then placed in the care of Fr George Haydock 1816-1830 followed by a quick succession of priests: Robert Tate 1830, William Parker 1830-1834 and Richard Browne 1834-1836.
The official diocesan record begins with the creation of the “Yorkshire District” 1840-1850, a precursor to the Beverley Diocese 1850-1878 and the Middlesbrough Diocese 1879.
